CAP038
Georg Philip Kress (1719-1779)
Trio Sonata for Flute, Viola d'amore (Viola da Gamba) and BC
D-ROu Musica Saec. XVIII 20.12
The title page suggests the second part being played on a violin, but the part itself is in Scordatura and entitled 'Viola d'amour'. The existing Viola d'amore part poses a problem in terms of octaves: it is written in Alto and Bass clefs, an unusual choice for the Viola d'amore, and fits well on a Bass Viol in the given octave. However, put in treble clef and played an octave higher, the part makes sense for a Viola d'amore as well as a violin.
